A leading trade expert is urging those South African businesses currently benefiting from preferential market access to the US under the Africa Growth and Opportunity Act (Agoa) to begin to “wean” themselves off such benefits, owing to the increased risk of those preferences being revoked ahead of Agoa’s official expiry in 2025. South Africa’s state security minister David Mahlobo has accused ratings agencies of forcing regime change after Standard & Poor’s downgraded the government’s credit rating to junk in the beginning of April 2017. His statement was reported by the state-controlled SA Broadcasting Corporation on 9 April. Read more

In the first public hearing of its kind, the South African government explained to the International Criminal Court (ICC) why it failed to arrest Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir when he attended an African Union (AU) summit in Johannesburg in 2015. It was this event two years ago that precipitated South Africa’s decision to withdraw from the ICC – a process which has since been halted as government mulls its options and priorities. Read more
