Two of the biggest political liabilities have been removed from the boards of state-owned enterprises, but government companies remain the playground of President Jacob Zuma and the African National Congress (ANC).

Collin Matjila, who briefly was acting CE of Eskom and head of its tender board, is gone after Thursday’s Cabinet appointments, and Ellen Tshabalala — still SABC chairwoman — has been removed from the Transnet board. Read more

The visit to South Africa by Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier began with a surprise. When his plane landed at the Waterkloof military air base, there was no police escort waiting for him. This is a courtesy normally extended to every visiting politician. A breach of protocol!
