There is a joke in public service circles that goes something like this: “Have you heard what happened to South Africa after 1994? It was colonised by its Bantustans.”

The story is usually accompanied by wry laughs about South Africa’s new “colonialism of a special type”. Read more

In Pinetown, a security guard was stoned. In Kimberley, tyres burned in front of a factory entrance.  In Wadeville on the East Rand, women were beaten. In Krugersdorp on the West Rand, workers were told they would face consequences “like Marikana” should they cross the picket line. Read more
