Delivering his speech during the ANC’s 103rd birthday celebrations in Cape Town this week, President Jacob Zuma spoke directly on land reform.

Describing the “willing buyer, willing seller” model of land reform as “unsuccessful”, Zuma explained expropriation will be on the cards for South Africa this year. Read more

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has patent law in its sights. Before year end, it says, it will put a bill before Parliament which will usher in ‘an entire change’ to the existing rules. The department is also treating the changes as a done deal – even though the bill has yet to be tabled in Parliament, let alone endorsed by the legislature. Read more

Having assumed ‘custodianship’ of mineral and water resources and re-opened the land claims process, the State is now seeking wide powers to take or bypass patent rights. It says this is necessary to bring down the price of medicines and save lives, but the changes may not achieve these goals and will, in any event, extend far beyond the health sector. Read more
