As its lockdown lengthens, South Africa’s biggest fears are food shortages and the death toll if Covid-19 gets into the townships.

This is Day 23 of what was supposed to have been a 21-day lock-down but was extended for another two weeks by President Cyril Ramaphosa on Friday. On the surface it seems to be working remarkably well: today we’re up to only 52, and well below the UK curve. But the cracks are showing.

Ramaphosa’s personal standing is high, but his thuggish police chief and old Zuma-ite, Bheki Cele, has taken an almost sadistic pleasure in imposing it even in the townships where chronic over-crowding makes social distancing impossible to observe.
