South African Media Freedom Day, or Black Wednesday, commemorates the awful events of 19 October 1977 when Apartheid-era minister of justice Jimmy Kruger banned The World and Weekend World newspapers, leading to the arrest of editor Percy Qoboza and other journalists who were important voices in the Black Consciousness movement, in an act of brutal censorship and an unjustifiable attack on free speech. It is every person’s civic and moral duty to ask himself whether the government that has power over him is just and fair. He may not have elected the government, and in a democracy it is proper to be resigned to the power that the majority’s bidding has over him. But sometimes the government is so impudent and shameful, so contrary to his sense of justice and fair play, that a man finds its power intolerable. The moral question arises of how he ought to behave. Should he acquiesce as a man resigned? Should he wage a silent struggle against its overweening power? Should he violently thrash against its unbearable dominion? Read more
