Two decades on from 1994 seems an appropriate time to take stock of what has been achieved and where we have fallen short of our own expectations, and identify what remains to be done in South Africa. But perhaps it is also an appropriate moment to take stock of how we remember and represent our past and how the metanarratives, particularly about apartheid and opposition to apartheid, inform and overshadow our present and future. After a week in which it seemed the chaos at the SABC had reached its climax, Sunday brought news that matters were even worse than they first seemed. Not only is the COO someone who doesn’t have a matric, and lied about it, now, according to the City Press, the chair also lied about her qualifications. There are a few things we all know about South Africa. It has a lamentable savings rate. It has a household debt problem, as evidenced by rising non-performing loans at banks across the country. South Africans’ household income has been growing over the years. In addition, we know that inflation has been reasonably well contained for a number of years. Read more
