It’s something a minority of the electorate have been dreaming of – Parliament is going to be dissolved on Thursday afternoon thanks to a motion tabled by the African National Congress (ANC).

However, this isn’t the ruling party declaring anarchy to spice-up the end of the week: There’s a logical method behind the apparent madness.

ANC Chief Whip Jackson Mthembu has drafted the resolution, which will be voted through if it receives the support of more than half of the house. The governing party hold a comfortable majority, and other parties have said they back the move: Dissolution is nailed-on. That just leaves us with one big question. Why is this happening?
